News & Press ReleasesCrime Stoppers tip leads to arrestThursday, June 19, 2008KDHNews.com Killeen police arrested a suspect Tuesday in the June 9 aggravated robbery of the 7-Eleven in the 1000 block of South W.S. Young Drive. Police released surveillance footage June 12 from security cameras at the convenience store that showed an armed man demanding money from the attendant. Police received information through the Crime Stoppers line that led to the arrest of George Robert Powell III. "Information we received from the Crime Stoppers tip led us to identify the person who was involved," Killeen Police Department spokeswoman Carroll Smith said. Justice of the Peace Garland Potvin set Powell's bond at $500,000; he has been transferred to the Bell County Jail. Powell's photo has not been released at this time because of further pending charges. On June 12, Smith said police believe the suspect shown in the 7-Eleven surveillance footage committed four convenience store robberies in Killeen and Copperas Cove since May 22. Wednesday, Smith said Powell was arrested as a suspect in the June 9 robbery only, but there is a possibility that he may be charged in the other robberies. "Is there a possibility? Yes. Has he been charged? No. But there's further charges pending on him," Smith said. The man is believed to be responsible for two robberies in Copperas Cove and another in Killeen, Smith said June 12, before Powell was identified and arrested. Smith said the suspect's appearance, along with the technique and style of the robberies, led police to believe the crimes were linked. In 2003, Congress passed the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), which granted every American the right to look at their credit report once a year at no charge. As a result, all Texans may request a free annual copy of their credit report from each of the nationwide consumer credit reporting companies – Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion. AnnualCreditReport.com is the official site created by the three major credit bureaus to help consumers obtain their free credit report. The class meets at the Copperas Cove Library 501 S. Main St. and starts at 6:30 pm and ends at 9:30 pm.
The Copperas Cove Police Department Citizens Police Academy is designed to give interested members of our community insight into the day to day operations of their local law enforcement. For most law-abiding people, the only contact they have with the Police is when they are unfortunately stopped for a traffic infraction. These relatively few contacts leave individuals with a limited view of what their local law enforcement agency is really doing other than enforcing traffic laws and responding to situations that have already occurred. The Citizens Police Academy provides an arena for open dialogue and exposure to things that you care about most, the safety of all members of our community. During this ten week course, participants are not only instructed in different disciplines within the agency, but also given the opportunity to actually handle situations that law enforcement handles every day. These situations are staged for the benefit of the participant and it is through these mock scenes that they get exposure to what it is actually like to be on the other side of the fence as the officer responding in the scenario. We understand that a ten-week course can sound a little overwhelming, but it need not be. The course is designed to meet once a week for approximately three hours and you are allowed to miss up to three classes during that time period and still graduate at the end of the session. Every effort is made to work around participants schedule as much as possible because we understand that the world does not stop just because you are attending something like this. The goals of this academy are simple. First, to provide a venue between the police and the people that we serve and second (and most important) to enjoy yourself. Does this sound like something you would be interested in? If it does, we would love to have you attend the next one! Please contact Lt. Austin 547-4274 ext 541 or ext 537 for further information or to reserve your spot in the next class. With all of us working together, there is no limit to what we can accomplish.
